backing up the forum

Postby nadir » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:06 pm

If people know how to backup the forum database (via the phpbb given methods or via wget),
let me know. Step by step, please.

I found this:
http://kb.freeforums.org/questions/17/W ... Hosting%3F
Will try to understand it.

I got a tip to make use of this:
http://kb.freeforums.org/questions/17/W ... Hosting%3F

The main purpose is to store the links here, so i am ready to deal with it if i find the time.
So i herd u liek mudkip?

I see.
Same goes for recovery console.
Any other ideas? Space is not a problem. How-to is the problem.

mharrison told me this way:
Code: Select all
wget -k -m -E -p -np -R memberlist.php*,faq.php*,viewtopic.php*p=*,posting.php*,search.php*,ucp.php*,viewonline.php*,*sid*,*view=print*,*start=0* -o log.txt http://refracta.freeforums.org/index.php

It works.
As i am lazy as can be for me the solution is fine.
Anything wrong with that way?

I for one can easily store 50-100GB... that is not the problem.
(the first run was 3.4MB, so it is a long way to go...)

Any feedback is welcome, i never had to deal with such things.

If that works then that will backup the forum pages but it isn't something you can restore/use. But at least it is a good way to have a copy of the content itself.....good tip....could come in handy for stealing forum content of other places....

Mhh... i feared that it is only about the content.
I guess it has got to do with sql/databases/whatever...

Better only the content than nothing. I am open for suggestions
(best one would be someone else will do it :-) )

Hello markus,

I noticed you've been running http://refracta.freeforums.org/ for a few days and wanted to introduce you to a few things that can really help improve your forum. Just login to your admin panel and click the "Upgrades" tab to find these upgrades:

Domain Name ($15/year)
One of the most popular upgrades ever, this will change your forum domain to yourforum.com instead of refracta.freeforums.org.

Premium Service ($4.94/month)
The premium service adds a ton of features that will make more people want to visit your forum.

Advanced hosting ($5.33/month)
If you're an advanced user and want FTP access to install your own mods, styles, etc go to http://www.freeforums.org/advanced.php

A couple bucks will go a long way and really add value to your users. If you have any questions please post on our support forum @ http://support.freeforums.org

-FreeForums.org Team

My main problem is paypal and similar. I tried it several times, but failed.
I am broken (for real): that might be the reason, or i am too stupid.

I don't think at this point it is necessary.
Purpose of the forum is to have a place which stays, about refracta.
That means that without Dean being happy it is kinda pointless.

At minimum i will leave it, so in case things change we can "meet" here and ask other refractaists what is going on and why.

not really important to me to have 'advanced hosting' as I fear it is probably crappy hosting anyway....

if we need better than nadir (forum master) can come up with an alternative...

as long as we can pull the content then we can always host that content somewhere else so it will not be lost....even if it isn't restored properly to where it is usable...

forum master -> i prefer the correct term "the god of gods".

Kidding aside:
The command from above takes 4MB right now.
I for one will try to run it once a day.
I will back that up at another partition too.

It won't hurt if others do so too:
Code: Select all
wget -k -m -E -p -np -R memberlist.php*,faq.php*,viewtopic.php*p=*,posting.php*,search.php*,ucp.php*,viewonline.php*,*sid*,*view=print*,*start=0* -o log.txt http://refracta.freeforums.org/index.php
