retroshare

Postby nadir » Wed Sep 11, 2013 2:50 am

Mainly storing the links for myself. Not really a (good) how-to.

http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/

install with dpkg -i
http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... _7.0/i386/
both:
retroshare_0.5.4-0.6270~precise_i386.deb
libupnp3_1.6.6-4_i386.deb
You will perhaps have to remove an existing installationof libupnp (all debian repos including stable have higher versions). ****, but i couldn't find a better solution.

Create a gpg-key with seahorse.

Start "retroshare" and create an identity. Copy your gpg-key from retroshare-gui and go here:
http://176.31.248.87/w2c/en/

You will get a gpg key of the chatroom. Import it manually from the retroshare gui, and after short connect to one of the chatrooms and ask for friends
(Without friends it's completely useless).
OR: don't do the last part and use it only among friends with whom you want to communicate/share/etc.

I think it _might_ be an option. Some of us tried it in the past (but we gave up on it, obviously).
I didn't ask for friends in the chatroom, but am willing to add each and everyone i know already
(If i get to know people in the chatroom with similar interests i will add them too, sure).
I will add my gpg-key for retroshare later.

From what i see yet it has two avantages over any other solution i know:
- it really is easy
- it comes with quite some tools and they seem to work (let's say compared to gnunet).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retroshare
I am not that sure how secure it is, but it sure is more secure than the "clearnet" solutions (say IRC. And here it sure is more easy than to use tor IRC).

If one only wants a solution slightly more secure (perhaps much more secure, i simply don't know) without much headaches, then one should give it a try.

To put it different: This really is a solution for the masses, including your aunt or uncle.

Don't get me wrong: I am not good with such kind of friendships and am not looking for a friend (or plural of it). I got nothing against it neither, but am not sure if i will keep using retroshare at all. The ones who might want to use it either have friends with whom they want to communicate and share more secure or will find friends in the channel mentioned above (where you add your gpg-key and can add the channel).

At the wikipedia entry i found that precompiled binaries for the raspbian OS on the raspberry pi are to be found:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pishare ... =directory

Can someone enlighten me how that is supposed to work:
how to start it in a detached screen session:

screen -t retroshare -dmS RetroShare retroshare -display :0

I guess i will have to use VNC anyway, just asking out of interest.
