Unofficial Devuan beta live images.

Postby fsmithred » Sat May 07, 2016 4:06 pm

If someone want to see what Devuan-Jessie beta looks like without
installing it, I made some live isos. I expect that there will eventually
be an official Devuan-Live, but this is not it. HTH.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/refrac ... vuan_live/

Here's the README:

This live image was created in the following manner:

Installed Devuan-Jessie-1.0.0-beta with XFCE4 in VirtualBox.
Added missing Clearlooks-Phenix-purpy theme, gtk2-engines and
Added refractasnapshot-base, refractainstaller-base and their
dependencies. (see below)
Created live isohybrid image with refractasnapshot.

Start-Date: 2016-05-04 18:34:47
Commandline: apt-get --no-install-recommends -f install
Install: live-boot:amd64 (4.0.2-1, automatic), squashfs-tools:amd64
(4.2+20130409-2, automatic), live-config:amd64 (4.0.4-1, automatic),
mtools:amd64 (4.0.18-2, automatic), isolinux:amd64 (6.03+dfsg-5+deb8u1,
automatic), live-boot-initramfs-tools:amd64 (4.0.2-1, automatic),
syslinux:amd64 (6.03+dfsg-5+deb8u1, automatic), xorriso:amd64 (1.3.2-1.1,
automatic), syslinux-common:amd64 (6.03+dfsg-5+deb8u1, automatic),
live-config-sysvinit:amd64 (4.0.4-1, automatic), rsync:amd64 (3.1.1-3,
automatic), libisoburn1:amd64 (1.3.2-1.1, automatic)
End-Date: 2016-05-04 18:36:42

No other changes were made. All software with the exception of
refractasnapshot and refractainstaller came from the Devuan repository. No
other software repositories are configured.

You can burn this iso to DVD or copy it to a usb thumb drive with the 'dd'
command or 'cat' in exactly the same manner you would with other isohybrid

To install to hard drive, run 'refractainstaller' from a root terminal.
You do not need a network connection during the installation.
You will be asked a few questions, and then the running live system will
be copied to the selected partition(s). Any configuration changes you made
during the live session will be copied to the installation. There may be
some excpetions to this, as certain system files are excluded from the copy.
See /usr/lib/refractainstaller/installer_exclude.list and
(/)etc/refractainstaller.conf for details and additional options.

Once installed, you can create your own live-CD copy of your system, with
your software and configuration changes by running 'refractasnapshot' from
a root terminal.
See /usr/lib/refractasnapshot/snapshot_exclude.list and
(/)etc/refractasnapshot.conf for configuration options.

Edit: If you install and then make your own snapshot, be sure to set $edit_boot_menu to yes, so the user name gets added to the boot command. Any name other than "user" must be specified with something like
Code: Select all
on the append line of the isolinux boot menu. Else you'll be hitting the TAB key every time you boot. Next version of refractasnapshot will account for this and do it for you.

Login - Password
devuan - devuan
root - devuan

Edit3: refractasnapshot-9.3.3 will put the user name in the boot command if the name is not "user".

Boot fine here! This is a milestone. Writing from it's live session.

If you need to boot it "findiso" (e.g. your hardware cannot run virtualbox to a usable level or you don't want to to dd your nice multiboot 64GB usb stick) or don't use the default boot menu for other reason, you need "username=devuan" on your cmdline else it won't boot. Here's an example entry for etc/grub.d/40_custom (edit to suit and update-grub after):

Code: Select all
menuentry " ISO BOOT.. devuan_beta" {

insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set isofile='(hd0,msdos4)/devuan_beta/unofficial_live_devuan_beta_amd64_snapshot-20160506_1604.iso'

loopback loop $isofile

linux (loop)/live/vmlinuz boot=live union=aufs findiso=/devuan_beta/unofficial_live_devuan_beta_amd64_snapshot-20160506_1604.iso locales=en_GB.UTF-8 timezone=Europe/London  noeject swap debug=1 username=devuan hooks=file:///lib/live/mount/findiso/devuan_beta/hookscript

initrd (loop)/live/initrd.img

I have found "findiso" boot the most efficient way, with swap activated it runs fast, even on my old tin boxes.

One thing this shows is how good the refracta defaults actually are, there are a few hoops to jump to get this usable (keyboard setup and more) However the initial desktop appearance is quite decent.

I got some of that sorted in a "live-hook" script which also conveniently loads my wlan firmware, autoconnect and weasel configs with custom bookmarks.

The iso is over 700MB but with libreoffice and vlc I'm surprised it's not even larger. There are no "-dev" packages nor kernel headers (which can be large) but I never thought them to be much use for a live image anyway.

It has libsystemd0 (comment not necessarily criticism, although I prefer to be free of it)

Code: Select all
[email protected]:/home/devuan# dpkg -l|grep systemd
ii  libsystemd0:amd64                     215-17+deb8u4                        amd64        systemd utility library
[email protected]:/home/devuan# aptitude why libsystemd0
i   task-print-server Recommends hplip
i A hplip             Recommends sane-utils
i A sane-utils        Depends    libsystemd0

refractainstaller 9.1.8 is in the testing folder at sourceforge.

Added support to disable autologin with slim.

Also added a piece for trinity that was in the yad version but not the cli version.

Edit: installer changes work. I just tested refractainstaller with the live beta.

Isos were updated in August with partial Devuan themes.

Isos updated again yesterday (Dec 2) in conjunction with Devuan's beta 2 release.
- Additional theming elements added
- System updated/upgraded on the date in the file name
- Wireless driver packages added to a folder (same as in Refracta isos.)

They're in the same place as before:

The Dec. 2 amd64 iso has been replaced. I screwed up. Thought I tested the iso before upload, but apparently I didn't, and it doesn't boot.

unofficial_live_devuan_beta_amd64_snapshot-20161203_0200.iso is the BAD ISO. If you downloaded this one, throw it away!

unofficial_live_devuan_beta_amd64_snapshot-20161205_2229.iso is the replacement. This one boots.

I apologize for any inconvenience.
