Something has changed between 8.2 and 8.3.
I am able to burn 8.2 to usb using dd.
I was not able to burn 8.3 using dd, also refracta2usb failed as well

stavreli, did you use i386 or amd64?

Check the sha256sum to make sure the download was good.

Edit: what error messages are you getting or where is it failing? Using dd and using refracta2usb are two completely different methods.

I just tested the dd method on the 8.3 amd64 iso. It works here. I don't think I tested the 8.3 release with refracta2usb yet, but I did test a couple of the builds I made right before the one that got released. There shouldn't be a significant difference between them.

I've just dd'ed refracta8.3_xfce_i386-20170304_2347.iso to pendrive & booted it up successfully, so I'm guessing the same, dodgy download.

You are correct, I re-downloaded the iso and it worked with dd :D

Code: Select all
sudo dd if=refracta8.3_xfce_amd64-20170305_0250.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync

I can only say that there is a small aesthetic issue during boot

well done !!

That looks like the grub boot screen. I get similar (but without the splash) if gfxpayload is set to 800x600. I set it to 640x480 in refractasnapshot, but I get the best results with 1366x768. You can change it at the boot screen by typing 'e' to edit the entry, and then add the following on the second line (the empty line)
Code: Select all
set gfxpayload=(your preferred resolution)

If that's on a hard drive installation, edit /etc/default/grub and then run 'update-grub'. Add a line like this:
Code: Select all
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=1024x768
or whatever is the best resolution for your monitor.

Edit: (in case someone else runs into this)
If your system is encrypted, you will not see the prompt for the password. It's there, but you can't see it. Just wait a minute, and then enter the password. It will finish booting.
